(en) Secure use of cloud storage services
Each of us uses cloud storage services such as Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, because they allow us to easily save documents and access them anywhere.
But few know how to use these services in a safe manner.
Because in addition to the advantages that a cloud offers, there are unfortunately also dangers. This is because the data is managed by a provider, which can lead to risks with regard to data security, the administration of access rights and data backup.
For example, the confidentiality and integrity of the data may be violated or data may be deleted. The problem is that cloud systems encrypt users' data with a specific encryption key, but this is not with the users themselves, but with the provider. This enables the provider to view and process the data.
How can you use the cloud safely now?
- Inform about the security of the provider (reports, tests)
- Is the cloud provider doing the right thing for me? (Teamwork, storage space)
- What are the risks? (which data do I want to upload, which risk can arise)
You can use cloud storage services safely with the following tools:
- Cryptomator (data is encrypted in a vault that is in the cloud)
- Tresorit (significantly higher security through end-to-end encryption, data can only be viewed by users themselves)
- Private Vault for OneDrive (opening by 2-factor authentication, normal use of OneDrive without an extra password)
