Introduction
The purpose of this guide is to help you install a printer of the St. Pölten UAS on your own devices. One prerequisite is that the LAN or WLAN is correctly installed on your computer and you are logged into the system. Generally, you should only install the printers Canon_Secureprint_SW and Canon_Secureprint_Col in order to use follow-me printing.
1. Windows 10
Press the Windows key + R and type in “\\printing“. Confirm with “OK”.
You may need to authenticate yourself. The system asks for your UAS user name and password – please remember to enter the user name in the form “FH\user name”! For example: If your user name is mm010001, you have to type in FH\mm010001.
In the new window that pops up, select the printer you want: Please use Canon_Secureprint_SW or Canon_Secureprint_Col only!
Windows automatically loads the drivers, so the printer should be available now.
1.1 Windows 10 following a password change
Attention: If the UAS login password has been changed, it is possible that the release is not working anymore and the old login data have to be deleted.
To do this, access the “Anmeldeinformationsverwaltung“ (login information management) by typing the word into the search box:
Under “Windows-Anmeldeinformationen” (Windows login information), you will find the old login which you have to delete:
After that, you have to repeat the login (see beginning of item 2).
2. Linux
The installation under Linux is shown using the example of Gnome under Ubuntu. It is strongly based on the interface of Cups and is displayed similarly under all Linux GUIs. Just as is the case in Windows, the two printer queues Canon_Secureprint_SW for back-and-white print and Canon_Secureprint_Col for colour print are intended for students.
2.1 Installation of the back-and-white printer Canon_Secureprint_SW
Open the printer configurations and create a new printer.
In the menu “Netzwerkdrucker“, select the item “Windows Printer via SAMBA”.
Type “FH/printing.fhstp.local/CANON_Secureprint_SW” into the smb address field. If you are not using Gnome (as shown here), you may have to use one of the following paths:
smb://FHSTP.LOCAL/printing.fhstp.local/CANON_Secureprint_SW
or
smb://username:password@FHSTP.LOCAL/printing.fhstp.local/CANON_Secureprint_SW
The user authentication is mandatory. As for the user name and password, you have to use your UAS user name and password. You can check your data by clicking on “Verifizieren” (verify).
When it comes to the printer driver group, please select the “Generic” driver from the list.
As driver, please select the “PCL 5 Printer“ with the option “Generic PCL 5 Printer - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.10-per2[en]“.
As for the printer name and description, we recommend “CANON_Secureprint_SW”.
2.2 Installation of the colour printer Canon_Secureprint_Col
The installation is essentially the same as the installation of the Canon_Secureprint_SW. Only a few details differ:
Type “FH/printing.fhstp.local/CANON_Secureprint_Col” into the smb address field. If you are not using Gnome (as shown here), you may have to use one of the following paths:
smb://FHSTP.LOCAL/printing.fhstp.local/CANON_Secureprint_Col
or
smb://username:password@FHSTP.LOCAL/printing.fhstp.local/CANON_Secureprint_Col
As driver, please select the “PCL 5c“ with the option “Foomatic/hpijs“.
As for the printer name and description, we recommend “CANON_Secureprint_Col”.
In addition, you have to open the printer properties once again after the installation and set the printout mode in the item “Druckeroptionen” (printer options) to “600dpi, Best, Colour, Black + Color Cartr” in order to make sure that you are printing in colour.
3. MAC OS X
- Go to “Systemeinstellungen“ (system settings) in the Apple menu and select “Drucker & Scanner“ (printer & scanner).
- Click on the + symbol to add a new printer
- Now hold the control key (Strg or ctrl), click on any icon in the toolbar of the window and select “Symbolleiste anpassen” (customise toolbar)
- Drag the “Erweitert” (advanced) icon to the toolbar of the previous window and click on “Fertig” (finished)
- Click on the “Erweitert” (advanced) icon
- Now define the following settings:
- “Typ” (type): Windows printer via spools
- “Gerät” (device): “Anderes Gerät” (other device)
- URL: smb://printing.fhstp.local/Canon_Secureprint_SW (for black-and-white printer) or smb://printing.fhstp.local/Canon_Secureprint_Col (for colour printer)
- Name: Assign any name to the printer
- “Verwenden” (use): „Allgemeiner PostScript-Drucker“ (general post-script printer)
- Click on “Hinzufügen“ (add). The printer has been added.
- If you wish to print a document, you can now select the desired printer. Click “Drucken” (print).
- Now enter your user name and password. Confirm with “OK”.
- You can now print your documents on a printer of the St. Pölten UAS.
ATTENTION! Printing under Mac OS X has been known to cause problems with the calculation of black-and-white pages whenever the Generic PostScript printer driver is used. The documents are printed in colour and are also billed as such, even though they are in the black-and-white queue. In case of doubt, always use a pure black-and-white printer to print your documents.
